Covid-19: one more death puts total at 117, active cases fall to 925

Another death from Covid-19 has been logged, health officials said last night.

The grim news brought the total number of coronavirus-related deaths to 117, but there were strong signs that the spike in Covid-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant was waning.

The health ministry said 241 new cases had been detected out of 6,199 tests — a positivity rate of 3.9 per cent.

A total of 18 of the new cases came in from overseas, 75 were classed as on-island transmissions and 148 are under investigation.

There have been 719 recoveries since Thursday’s update — which brought the number of active cases down to 925.

The last time the number of active cases dropped below 1,000 was on January 2, when there were 987.

There are 14 people in hospital, two of them in intensive care, and 911 cases being monitored by health officials.

Of the active cases, 88 were from overseas, 261 were on-island transmissions and 576 are under investigation.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: “Sadly, Bermuda has recorded another coronavirus related death. I extend my deepest condolences to everyone associated with the deceased.

“Thanks to the success of our vaccine and booster programme, Bermuda is making progress.

“But many people are still getting sick and, unfortunately, we are still seeing coronavirus-related deaths.

“I would like to remind people who have not yet been vaccinated to speak to your doctor. Those who are eligible for the booster shot, please get it as soon as possible.”

New active cases

The new cases were:

Wednesday: 80 positive out of 1,823 results (4.4 per cent positivity)

Thursday: 66 positive out of 1,767 results (3.7 per cent positivity)

Friday: 57 positive out of 1,636 results (3.5 per cent positivity)

Saturday: 38 positive out of 973 results (3.9 per cent positivity)

There have been 10,793 cases in Bermuda since March 2020 and 9,751 people have recovered.

A total of 2,172 of them came in from overseas and 6,155 were on-island transmissions.

There were 3,872 cases from a known contact and 2,283 from unknown contacts. A total of 2,466 cases are under investigation.

The ministry said that information on active cases by vaccination status, transmission, and variant was unavailable.

The seven-day average of the island’s real-time reproduction number is 0.71.

Ms Wilson added: “We must keep doing our part to keep each other safe and to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“As always, to decrease the odds of getting the coronavirus, avoid the three Cs — closed spaces, crowded places and close contact settings.

“Follow public health guidelines, wear a mask, practise good hand hygiene, and maintain physical distance.”
