Hospital cases double as active cases rise

Bermuda’s Covid-19 numbers rose from 229 to 258 this week, although no new deaths from the virus were reported.

Twelve Covid-19 patients are in hospital, up from five last week, but none are in intensive care.

According to a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health, 239 people tested positive with the virus in the past week, while 210 people have recovered.

Of the new cases, 71 have been classified as imported while 75 were the result of local transmission.

The source of the remaining 93 cases remains under investigation.

The island’s real-time reproduction number is 0.71.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, again urged the public not to become complacent as Covid-19 continues to be “very prevalent” on the island.

“It’s easy to become complacent, but we must remain vigilant,” she said.

“Numbers are rising in positive cases in various sectors of our community and we must remain cautious. “There are various Covid-19 strands circulating and we are seeing cases where individuals are being infected with the coronavirus more than once in a short period of time.

“In that regard, I am urging individuals to please continue to follow public health guidance; wear a mask when in large group settings; physically distance, and practice good hand hygiene.”

She added that anyone who feels unwell should stay home, as should anyone who tests positive.

At the last update on June 29, the island recorded 229 active cases of the virus, with five people in hospital and none in intensive care.

Also last week, the island’s death toll rose by two to 140 for the pandemic.
