Covid social-media message is false, says health ministry

A message circulating on social media warning that a new variant of the Covid-19 virus is far more dangerous than previous variants has been branded false by health chiefs.

The message, which claims to be from the Ministry of Health, states that the XBB variant of the disease “is five times more virulent that the Delta variant and has a higher mortality rate”.

The message goes on to advise readers to wear double masks and maintain social-distancing.

But yesterday the Ministry of Health dismissed the claims.

A spokeswoman said: “This message did not come from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation advises that current data does not suggest XBB is more deadly than Omicron, which itself is less lethal than Delta.

“Please do not forward this message and only rely on official health and Covid-19 related information from the Government of Bermuda’s official communications section, the Department of Communication.

“Again, this message is false and the Government encourages residents to visit www.gov.bm for the latest health information.”
