Clarien Bank and its customers have donated more than $11,000 to help a charity deliver hundreds of freshly cooked meals a week to vulnerable people.

The bank encouraged its customers, employees and the wider community to donate to Meals on Wheels through its holiday giveback campaign.

It said “a generous sum” was donated over the Christmas season and this was supplemented by The Clarien Foundation, the bank’s charitable arm, bringing the total donation to $11,450.

Jason Powell, president of Meals on Wheels said: “On behalf of those in our community who enjoy a nourishing meal prepared by Meals on Wheels, we would like to thank Clarien for its very generous donation. We truly appreciate the support.”

He added: “The gift will go a long way towards ensuring that we are able to continue our mission to prepare and deliver freshly cooked meals to people in our community who are incapacitated, unable to cook a meal on their own, or who have no one else they can depend on to do this for them.”

Michael DeCouto, Clarien’s executive vice-president and chief digital and marketing officer, said: “Meals on Wheels in particular has a special place in our hearts. We have witnessed first-hand how the charity not only provides those in need with a healthy, delicious afternoon meal but also how their dedicated volunteers and staff develop longstanding relationships with those who receive their services.

“This helps to ensure the health and safety of some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community is upheld.”

Founded in 1975, Meals on Wheels caters to more than 240 clients with various dietary restrictions including diabetes, those with renal conditions, as well as vegetarians, vegans, and those with gluten allergies. Its clients are elderly, sick or disabled.

The charity currently has four part-time staff who support corporate and community volunteers who assist with cooking the meals, packaging and delivering the dishes piping hot to the clients’ doorsteps island wide. The charity also donates food to the Cathedral meals programme.

In addition to the annual Holiday GiveBack Campaign, Clarien employees dedicate one or two days per year to volunteering with the organisation.
