Recall of specific granola bars and cereals by Quaker
Granola bars and cereals from a major US producer are being recalled owing to a possible health risk.
It was announced by Quaker that specific items were potentially contaminated with salmonella.
The company released a detailed nine-page list of products affected by the recall.
A press release said that the Quaker Oats Company, through its authorised distributor Dunkley & Pioneer Dairies, announced the market withdrawal of certain granola bars and granola cereals "because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause severe infections and, occasionally, fatal outcomes in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems“.
It added: “Healthy individuals infected with salmonella typically experience fever, diarrhoea [which may be bloody], nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
“In rare circumstances, salmonella infection can lead to the organism entering the bloodstream and causing more serious illnesses, such as infected arteries (ie, infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
The release said: “The products listed on this website [www.quakergranolarecall.com] were produced in the United States and distributed to Bermuda.
“Therefore, the company informs potential consumers to check their pantries for any of the listed products and discard them.
“Additionally, consumers with any of the mentioned products can return the described product to the original store where they purchased it, presenting their purchase receipt.”
Kyle Dailey, a sales manager at Dunkley’s, said this afternoon: “We were given formal notification of the recall by Quaker late Wednesday evening and took immediate action.
“We suspended sales and isolated the product in our warehouse for the recalled items, began notifying customers of the issue and worked to have the items removed from the market immediately.
“As noted in the press release, consumers that have purchased any recalled products can return them to stores along with the purchase receipt for a refund.”
Items on the list included Quaker Big Chewy bars in chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookie dough flavours, with specific universal product codes and best-before-end dates.
Chewy Dipps and various minis were part of the recall, as were a number of cereals, such as apple cinnamon and blueberry vanilla flavours — also with particular codes and dates.
Bars included in some snack mix and variety packs were affected by the withdrawal as well.
The press release added: “To date, Quaker has not received reports of illnesses related to the products covered by this market withdrawal.
“Quaker has reported these actions to the relevant local authorities.
“It is important to note that this withdrawal only applies to the specific products listed and no other Quaker product is affected.”
The Ministry of Health confirmed that it was informed about the recall and that Dunkley’s "verified the removal“ of the items from the market.
A statement added: “The Ministry of Health has not received any reports of illnesses related to these products.”
