Health minister asks residents to give the gift of life
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, has issued a heartfelt appeal to residents to donate blood as “giving the gift of life”.
The minister spoke out after a plea by health officials this week for more donors to come forward.
Speaking ahead of World Blood Donor Day tomorrow, Ms Wilson said that blood transfusions played a critical role in healthcare, saving lives by supporting surgeries, emergency response teams and patients facing life-threatening conditions.
Ms Wilson said: “Unlike many medical resources, blood cannot be artificially produced — it must come from generous donors willing to make a difference.
“Here in Bermuda, road traffic accidents remain a significant source of severe injuries, making a reliable blood supply essential.
“Our hospital relies on consistent donations to ensure timely, life-saving treatment. For eligible individuals, donating blood is a simple yet profoundly meaningful act. In just an hour, a single donation can provide hope and healing for someone in urgent need.“
Ms Wilson also highlighted a benefit that those who donate blood experience — an improvement in their own health.
She said: “Beyond saving lives, blood donation benefits the donor as well. It refreshes the body’s system by stimulating new cell production, improves cardiovascular health and offers a free medical checkup.
“The process is entirely safe, quick and painless, and each contribution strengthens our community’s ability to care for those in need.
“Blood donation is more than a medical necessity — it is an act of compassion that unites us.
“By educating our community and raising awareness, we can encourage more individuals to step forward. Your decision to donate can make a lasting impact, ensuring hospitals have the resources to respond swiftly in times of crisis.
“I encourage everyone to support this vital cause. A single act of generosity could mean the world to someone in need.”
Anyone willing to donate blood but are unsure about their blood type can call the blood donor centre at 236-5067, e-mail blood.donor@bhb.bm or message via WhatsApp at 533-9553.
