Modified Covid-19 vaccine arrives on island
An updated Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, designed to target the JN.1 variant of the virus circulating globally, is now available on the island, the Ministry of Health has announced.
The public can get the vaccine by appointment at the Hamilton Health Centre and at general practitioners across the island.
The updated formulation enhances the body’s natural defence mechanisms which prompt the immune system to produce antibodies against the disease.
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, urged residents to get up-to-date protection against the illness.
She said: “As previously stated, the Covid-19 virus remains present in our community, and we will likely always have some cases.
“I urge everyone to continue taking precautions to avoid catching and spreading Covid-19.”
Last month, the ministry was in close contact with its key regional and international public health partners as it monitored the NB 1.8.1 variant.
The newer variant of the virus was spreading across China and had been detected in United States, among other countries.
Residents were encouraged to practice good hygiene, maintain social distancing and adhere to respiratory etiquette to guard themselves.
Anyone who experiences symptoms of Covid-19 was encouraged to take a home antigen test or seek guidance from a healthcare provider.
Individuals with a positive test result should isolate for at least five days while others who were close contact were advised to monitor their health and test as necessary.
Health officials recommended travellers wear masks in crowded or enclosed spaces such as airports, planes and public transportation.
In addition to social distancing, they were advised to carry essential protective items including masks, hand sanitisers, disinfectant wipes and tissues to promote safety while on the move.
