Household survey to examine substance use

The National Household Survey is to begin on Tuesday (Photograph supplied)

A study of households is to gather information about the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in Bermuda, starting on Tuesday.

The Ministry of National Security, through the Department for National Drug Control, said the survey, conducted over the phone every four years, would last until November 28.

About 1,200 households have been randomly chosen to participate.

The survey guides policy decisions and enables the Government to measure the impact of programmes.

A single household member aged 16 or older will be interviewed, with questions covering topics such as demographics, access to drugs, experiences and perceptions of substance use, and attitudes towards prevention and treatment.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, said: “The National Household Survey is one of the most important tools we have to understand the realities of substance use in Bermuda.

“Reliable data allows us to shape evidence-based policies, direct resources where they are most needed and strengthen prevention, treatment and rehabilitation services.”

Mr Weeks acknowledged that some may be reluctant to participate but emphasised that all responses were confidential, with no individual information shared.

He added: “Your honest feedback will make a real difference.”

He said responses would enable policy to be “guided by facts, not assumptions”.
