Civil servants undertake crash course in proper respirator use
Staff across multiple civil services underwent a crash course last week on how to properly test and use a respirator.
Roy McKay, a pulmonary expert, led the Fit Test Training session involving members of the Department of Health, Corrections, long-term care centres and the Bermuda College.
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said that Dr McKay’s assistance was crucial for keeping up the Government’s safety standards.
She said: “The Department of Health recognises that partnership and co-operation are key to achieving high standards of care in occupational health and safety.
“This training demonstrated how cross-sector collaboration can strengthen capacity, efficiency and preparedness across Bermuda’s public health sector.”
Fit Test Training was developed for those working in healthcare and environments that posed an acute health risk.
Held at the Bermuda College on October 21, the training involved OSHA-compliant procedures for testing, using and maintaining N-95 masks.
Lynn Jackson, the Chief Nursing Officer, said: “Dr McKay’s thorough preparation and engaging delivery provided invaluable knowledge and practical experience.
“His dedication to sharing best practices in respiratory protection will enhance our ability to safeguard the health and safety of Bermuda’s workforce.”
Dr McKay works at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine and is an expert in respirator fit testing, training and selection.
