Community urged to avail of flu jab
Flu season is now in full swing, with the Ministry of Health encouraging people to protect themselves by getting vaccinated against influenza.
A spokeswoman said the ministry’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit observed an increase in reports of fever and respiratory symptoms, including influenza, strep throat and the common cold, as well as gastroenteritis cases such as salmonella and E Coli.
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: “This is a time when gatherings, celebrations and travel increase, and we want all residents to enjoy the holidays safely.
“By practising good hygiene, staying home when unwell and keeping vaccinations up to date, we can reduce the spread of illness and protect those most vulnerable.”
People should also seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen, take extra care around children, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions, travel safely, frequently wash hands and be mindful of food and water safety.
The vaccines, which became accessible in Bermuda in October, are available at the Department of Health’s Victoria Street clinic, at $20 for people younger than 65 and free for senior citizens.
The spokeswoman concluded: “The ministry continues to monitor cases closely and encourages all residents to remain vigilant.”
