The Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda has recognised seven candy stripers for their commitment and service to the organisation.

Starr Bowen was selected to be head candy striper for 2025-26, the Bermuda Hospitals Board said.

Ms Bowen was awarded the Penny Ray Achievement Award, with a medallion presented to her by Glen Gibbons, president of HAB.

Ms Bowen entered the programme in 2022. Last year she received the proficiency award for her service.

She was chosen based on her outstanding work commitment, hours volunteered and excellent attitude and interaction with her peers, volunteers and supervisors.

Ms Bowen, who was a 2025 HAB scholarship awardee, has volunteered 318½ hours.

A BHB spokeswoman said six proficiency awards were presented to candy stripers who demonstrated outstanding work commitment and hours to the programme, with Mackenzie Heaney, E’mari Ingemann, Antwanae Simmons, Dae ’Jon Smith, Isis Tucker and Chaya Lambert-James recognised.

The awardees joined in the 2023 group, with the award selection made in August based on hours completed.

Mr Gibbons presented badges and congratulated awardees for their commitment and service to the hospital.

Each is in line for the Head Striper Award, to be presented next year.

The organisation accepts 50 students each year into the programme.

At the moment there are 126 candy stripers enrolled. Would-be members can apply in writing to join, but must be at least 14.
