Members of the public can register for this year’s parish garden competition.

A spokeswoman said the contest, which promotes home and community gardening, is facilitated by the Grow Eat $ave programme in partnership with the departments of health and parks.

She explained: “[The competition] aims to support healthier living, improve access to fresh produce and reinforce local sustainability efforts.”

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: “Gardening provides an opportunity for households and communities to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables while supporting overall wellness.

“I encourage residents across Bermuda to register and participate as we continue to promote gardening as a practical and rewarding activity that supports physical health, mental wellbeing and community connection.”

The competition runs from February 23 until May 22, and photographs of gardens and items planted must be submitted between May 25 and 29.

Judging, which includes maintenance, design, intent, sustainability and additional garden features, will take place from June 1 to 12 and the winners will be announced during a special ceremony on June 18.

Categories in this year’s competition include School Garden, Non-Traditional Garden, Small Garden (less than 10ft x 10ft), Community Garden, and Large Garden (10ft x 10ft or bigger.)

Interested participants can visit gov.bm/garden-competition to learn more or register free of charge. Registration forms must be submitted by February 20.

The spokeswoman said: “Participants are also encouraged to take photographs of any produce entered into the Agricultural Exhibition, held 23 to 25 April, as a bonus submission.”
