New charity for caregivers aims to close critical gaps

A charity has been launched with the intention of supporting caregivers throughout the island.

The Bermuda Caregivers Alliance was cofounded by Lisa James and Maurice Foley, a candidate for the One Bermuda Alliance, to help clients who often operate without consistent emotional support, training opportunities or peer networks.

It aims to address a growing need for structured support for people who provide care to seniors, those living with disabilities and others who require daily assistance.

The charity said that seniors represent one of the fastest-growing demographic groups in Bermuda and that as the demand for care giving continues to rise, the need to support those who provide it has become increasingly important.

The charity aims to help fill a gap by offering caregiver support groups, educational workshops, resource sharing and advocacy initiatives designed to strengthen the wellbeing of caregivers across the island.

Ms James, who is the charity’s chairwoman, said: “Caregivers are an essential part of our community yet many carry significant emotional and physical responsibilities while working in isolation.

“The Bermuda Caregivers Alliance was created to ensure caregivers have access to support, connection and resources that recognise the important role they play in the lives of others.”

The charity will also focus on building a community of support for family caregivers and professional caregivers, providing opportunities for education, peer connection and collaboration with healthcare and community organisations.

Mr Foley, who is the deputy chairman of the alliance, said: “Caregivers play a critical role in supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

“The Bermuda Caregivers Alliance represents an important step towards ensuring that caregivers themselves are supported through education, community connection and greater recognition of the work they do.”

The charity said it is committed to using donations and resources responsibly to develop initiatives that address the underlying challenges faced by caregivers, including burnout, emotional stress and professional development needs.

It will host its first public event bringing together caregivers, community organisations and members of the public. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Supporting caregivers ultimately strengthens families, communities and the broader care system,” Ms James added.

“When caregivers are supported, everyone benefits.”

The charity is inviting caregivers, community organisations and members of the public to join the caregiver community and learn more about the plans.

Robin Tucker, an OBA MP, commended her colleague on the initiative in the House of Assembly today.
