US clinic partners with WRC for reproductive care referrals
A local charity has partnered with a US healthcare provider to offer reproductive care to Bermudian women.
The partnership between the Women’s Resource Centre and New-York based Choices Women’s Medical Centre will give women in Bermuda access to information, advocacy and referral services, as well as emotional support and care co-ordination.
Choices is a comprehensive women's healthcare facility in Queens, New York, offering services that include abortion care up to 24.6 weeks, gynaecological and prenatal care, birth control, telemedicine, counseling, doula care, and travel and financial support.
The announcement of the partnership comes while abortion remains a crime in Bermuda. The Government has not fulfilled a promise made in the 2025 Throne Speech and in the Progressive Labour Party’s 2025 general election platform.
Juanae Crockwell, executive director of the Women's Resource Centre said: “Women deserve bodily autonomy, compassionate support and access to healthcare options that meet their needs.
“While legislative and policy discussions continue, we believe it is important to take meaningful action now to ensure that women have access to the services and support they need.”
The WRC made the announcement during a summit looking at abortion accessibility in Bermuda involved policymakers, health professionals, advocates and members of the community.
Attendees included Kim Wilkerson, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Keechia Tuckett, the Permanent Secretary of Health, and Arianna Hodgson, a former senator and Gender Affairs Council member.
Ms Crockwell said the partnership was a step towards a broader conversation about women's health in Bermuda.
She added: “Our goal is simple — to ensure that every woman in Bermuda has access to the information, support and healthcare options she needs to make the decisions that are right for her health, her family and her future.”
Choices was founded by Merle Hoffman in 1971 as one of the first abortion clinics in the United States.
Ms Hoffman said geography “should not determine your destiny,” adding: “Since 1971, when our very first patient crossed state lines to find us, Choices has carried one promise across the decades — safe, confidential care stays within reach, wherever your journey begins.”
The partnership was cemented with a $20,000 donation from Choices to the Women’s Resource Centre. The funds will be used to help offset the direct costs of reproductive care for women in need, the WRC said.
“The funding reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that women and girls can access essential reproductive health services with dignity, compassion, and respect,” the statement said.
