The Ministry of Health has said that no produce associated with an outbreak of intestinal illness in the US has been imported to the island.

Shredded iceberg lettuce originating in Mexico and distributed in the United States has been blamed for thousands of cases of cyclosporiasis, diarrhoea caused by the parasite cyclospora, since May.

A health ministry spokeswoman said that the affected produce was primarily supplied through food-service channels rather than retail.

The spokeswoman confirmed today that environmental health officers had made inquiries with importers, adding: “None of the affected products are known to have been imported into Bermuda.”

She also noted that under standard practice, any importer that receives a recall notice from a producer is expected to act on it immediately.
