The Ministry of Health urged the public to be cautious amid an increase of Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses in recent weeks.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said today the ministry was prepared for and monitoring the “usual seasonal rise” in such illnesses.

She added that “simple, sensible precautions are enough to keep each other safe”.

Her comments came after a notice, believed to have been sent to people connected with Dellwood Middle School, said that a “number of personnel” were thought to have been impacted by Covid-19 and three students were absent owing to illness.

A ministry spokeswoman advised anyone who might experience a cough, sore throat, fever, body aches, congestion or a loss of taste or smell to stay home until symptoms improve. They should also avoid close contact with others and consider testing for Covid-19.

She added that people whose symptoms worsen, or who are at higher risk of complications or have trouble breathing, should seek medical advice.

Anyone testing positive for Covid-19 or who suspects they have flu should follow guidance from their healthcare provider.

She said regular handwashing and use of hand sanitiser, along with covering coughs and sneezes and staying away from those who are visibly ill, can reduce disease transmission — but that the seasonal flu vaccine is one of the best ways to reduce severe illnesses and protect people at higher risk.

She added that opening windows or spending time outdoors can reduce risk, and those who are vulnerable or recovering from illness can wear a mask in crowded indoor settings.
