The cocktails are literally on fire at the new Cosmopolitan Nightclub in Hamilton.Owner Dennie O’Connor has completely revamped what was once Moon Nightclub, at 98 Front Street, to keep the place fresh and happening. The entrepreneur, who also owns The Cellar at the Fairmont Southampton, hoped that “flair bartending” would be one of the attractions at Cosmopolitan. Flair bartending turns the normally mundane act of pouring a drink into a small show with cocktails set on fire, and bottles spun.Expert Costin Tarsoaga is currently in Bermuda to work at Cosmopolitan and train local bartenders in the art of flair bartending.“He brings a whole different experience to the club scene,” said Mr O’Connor. “He is not just serving drinks, he is serving drinks with personality. He is also a bar chef specialising in drinks that are almost like food.”Mr O’Connor enjoys making drinks not just with fruits but also with vegetables and herbs such as mint and basil. Of course, the club will also specialise in the popular alcoholic drink, the cosmopolitan.“My signature drink is a cocktail made with basil and sugar cane, lime, vodka and cranberry juice,” said Mr Tarsoaga. “My favourite base would be vodka because it is more neutral and you can play more with it. In London, the cocktail capital of the world, they are using gin and cognac a lot. Those have a strong flavour.”Added Mr O’Connor: “We are once again the newest lounge and bar on Front Street. After watching Flanagan’s, The Beach, Café Cairo and Docksider Pub and Restaurant deliver upgrades in the past three years we decided to follow suit. Energy, synergy and bringing people together of different cultures is the true meaning of the word cosmopolitan. That is why we picked the name. Yes, it is also a cocktail but the name fit perfectly for understanding the direction of the club and the clientele we are catering to. We want to get people excited again.”Mr O’Connor has invested in special high-tech light-emitting diode panels that wrap around the inner walls of the club. They can be programmed to flash lights or letters and words and, according to Mr O’Connor, will give the club a special frenetic energy and heat. The roof has also been redesigned to be retractable.Music will include pop, dance and soca but not so much hip hop and reggae.“It is more of a European type of vibe,” said Mr O’Connor.DJs lined up so far include DJ Rusty G from Vibe 103, Supertone and DJ Scoobey.“We want people to say, wow, this is really cool,” he said. “There used to be more expats, but that has changed. We are finding it quite challenging because restaurants are now staying open later. We want to cater to the business sector for sure, but we are also passionate about tourism.”For more information see their Facebook page under Cosmopolitan Bermuda.
