Hendrix inspired me to perform
A Jimi Hendrix song played during a sleepover changed the course of Clifton David Broadbridge’s life.He was 12, and until then he’d never heard of the rock and roll star who died before he was born. Still, he was so inspired, he eventually became a musician himself.Today, Mr Broadbridge, 34, of Toronto, Canada has his own rock and roll album, has toured with top musicians and made appearances on network television. He will perform tomorrow at the Bermuda Corporate Games Street Festival in Hamilton, a wrap-up of the four-day event celebrating sport, business and tourism.“I was fortunate to know what I wanted to do from an early age,” said Mr Broadbridge. “When I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan playing Hendrix’s ‘Little Wing’ I just knew I had to be a guitarist when I grew up. I started taking guitar lessons immediately.”Over the years, the guitar player has toured with Canadian band Prozzäk and soloist FeFe Dobson. He also performed with Classic Albums Live, a concert series based in Toronto. As part of that he toured North America performing songs from Jimi Hendrix’s ‘All You Experienced’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’.“That has been a great learning experience,” he said.To stay at the top of his game he practises four to eight hours every day. In fact, he practises so much that the doctor recommended he wear special wrist bands protect his wrists and hands. Mr Broadbridge recorded his first album with legendary producer engineer Eddie Kramer, who did all the Jimi Hendrix music and recorded Woodstock, The Beetles and Led Zeppelin, among others.Mr Kramer has said of Mr Broadbridge: “Clifton is the best guitarist to come out of Canada in a long time. He has the soul of an old blues guy with all of the amazing contemporary chops needed to kill the audience with one blow.”Said Mr Broadbridge: “Having the chance to work with Mr Kramer is awesome. I am still a big Jimi Hendrix fan. When I was recording my album it was in the middle of them mixing the newest Jimi Hendrix album released called ‘Anthology’. On a Friday, we would finish up, and the crew would be getting ready for the Hendrix family to come in and record the next day. It was surreal.”Mr Broadbridge’ opened for Justin Timberlake during his 2004/2005 Justified tour, and has also performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Ellen DeGeneres Show.“Going from no television shows to playing on Jay Leno was crazy,” he said. “I was surprised at how everyone reacted. My family was very excited. You yourself don’t have time to take it in, because your schedule is busy. It is a promotional thing for the artist’s album. Your job is to do a great job.”He is also an accomplished songwriter. His track ‘Deep Inside a Dream’ was used by Honda Canada as the theme song for its 2007 advertising trailer. The Street Festival will begin on Saturday at 6.30pm at City Hall, with a parade of games participants. The festival will continue on Front Street from 8pm to 12am with food, drink and entertainment. Admission is free. The closing ceremony takes place Sunday on Front Street from 6pm to 8pm.
