Looking forward in style — and a few things that would be best left behind

The streets of Hamilton were quiet this week — we assume because some people may be still on vacation after the holiday or choosing to stay inside and away from the cold.

Despite the chilly weather, a handful of local fashionistas were still able to get the New Year off to the right start with their style choices. The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section caught up with some trendsetting women for our weekly ‘Fashionista On The Street’ column. We got to hear what inspires their everyday look and got their feedback on what styles from last year should be retired in 2014.

Kristen Carreiro, 28, said she felt that mid-drift baring crop tops should be on the out this year. She said: “I like leaving more to the imagination when it comes to fashion.”

Mrs Carreiro, a manager at clothes store Atelerie, described her style as simple and likes to keeps it basic when it comes to accessories. “I’m a minimalist and like to let each piece of clothing speak for itself,” she said. “I get inspiration from everyday people how they can take styles and make it their own. I might see someone on the street and say ‘Oh I like that’.”

College student Sacha Kessaram said she would be leaving behind her long locks in 2013 — and opt for a shoulder length haircut, with ombré colour, going forward this year.

Ms Kessaram admitted her main goal when it comes to fashion is to keep things comfortable and eclectic.

“I don’t really turn anything down when it comes to new styles,” she said. “For instance this necklace is from a National Trust sale, so I just try to find unique pieces from all sorts of places that you wouldn’t normally think of to add to my look.”

The 25-year-old said she typically looks through websites like Pinterest for fashion inspiration, as well as Canadian magazine LouLou.

Aspiring biology teacher, Antoinette Webb, 18, said she likes to take a page from 1950s or 60s style books when it comes to fashion. She also tries to keep her look conservative and classy and not show too much skin.

While she’s all for polka dots and bold red lips, one trend she would like to disappear in 2014 is the bright blue and green lip shades that dominated the catwalk and magazines last year. “I don’t like that. I prefer classic lip colours,” she said.

Shaylee Trott, 25, defined her street style as “comfortable and cute”. She said: “I just go with what I am feeling. When I go shopping, I buy what I like and do my best to rock it.

“I don’t really consider myself fashionable, because I don’t really follow trends. I just wear what I like and go with how I am feeling.

“I like wearing colours and being causal, but I always try and make it presentable,” she added.

Twenty-two-year-old Desiree Riley said her day to day style ranges from preppy to pert, depending on her mood. She admittedly likes looking at British and European trends for inspiration and admires how people from those places tend to make the styles their own.

One look she hopes won’t re-emerge on the runway in 2014 are the “really, crazy high platform sneakers”.

“I think that trend had its time in 2013, but now that 2014 is here we should try something different,” she said.
