RenRe names Pell scholarship winner

RenaissanceRe has announced that the 2012 RenaissanceRe Undergraduate Scholarship has been awarded to Saltus Grammar School student, Daniel Pell. Mr Pell will be attending Waterloo University in the Fall to pursue a double degree in mathematics and business administration, majoring in actuarial science and risk management.Recipient of the RenaissanceRe Scholarship is determined by a committee of Bermudians from across the RenaissanceRe organisation and covers tuition at an accredited institution for a period of up to four years.Neill Currie, President and CEO of RenaissanceRe, said: “Once again, we had a difficult job selecting one winner from the wonderful students shortlisted for our Scholarship this year. Ultimately, we were impressed with Danny’s tenacity in his pursuit of excellence in all fields, his engagement with the community, and his clarity of thought.“We believe Danny exemplifies values that underpin RenaissanceRe’s high-performance culture and we are pleased to support him through his undergraduate education.”Mr Pell was recently awarded the 2012 Outstanding Teen Award for Academic Achievement.A former member of his high school debate team, Mr Pell’s oratory skills won him the 2011 Bermuda High School Public Speaking Championships.He went on to represent Bermuda in the 2012 World Schools Debating Championship in Cape Town, where he held the position of team captain.Mr Pell continues to show his enthusiasm and support for Bermuda’s National Debate Team by volunteering time assisting the national team coach with training younger students.In 2009, Mr Pell was selected to take part in the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge, following which he crewed a yacht returning to Newport from Bermuda.Daniel has been House Captain for Saltus for the past two years.A keen rugby player, he instigated the recreation of the rugby team at his school, as well as representing Bermuda at Under 16 and Under 18 levels.He currently plays rugby for the Under 19 Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club.A broad range of educational studies preparing students for successful careers in a business environment is permitted for the scholarship application.The criteria for selection include academic and personal excellence, demonstrated leadership qualities and a commitment to serving the community.
