Lloyd’s of London going paperless with iPad app

Game Changer: New iPad app launched at Lloyd's of London moves the institution one step closer to being paperless.

It’s one of the largest and oldest insurance institutions in the world, with 325 years of history and tradition, but a digital revolution of sorts is taking place at Lloyd’s of London.A new iPad app launched at Lloyd’s this week is being hailed a ‘game-changer’ and is moving the City institution one step closer to being paperless. The app is called X-presso and was developed by the UK-based technology group Xchanging. The company says app will enable both brokers and underwriters to work on iPads and cut back on the paper pushing in the boxes at Lloyd’s.But, for an institution as steeped in tradition as Lloyd’s of London, the question now is: what does this move to embrace technology mean for the time-honoured tradition of the face-to-face negotiation at One Lime Street?Jim Sadler, chief information officer at Xchanging said the technology is a great step forward in modernising processes while valuable traditions.“For far too long it has been felt that digitisation of the market would interfere with the critical face-to-face negotiation between broker and underwriter,” Mr Sadler said.“This app helps us to support and reinforce that face-to-face activity, finally exposing the myth that insurance is a backward looking business that cannot evolve into the modern day. I am proud that Xchanging has been able to bring to market such an important ‘first’ for the insurance market.”The application allows users to access the central market repository (IMR or Insurers’ Market Repository) of more than 25 million insurance documents and stitches together all the multiple documents associated with an insurance claim in an indexed file. The app also allows users to find the critical page quickly and attach temporary notes to files on during a meeting or phone conversation.Richard Ward, Lloyd’s chief executive, told The Independent newspaper the launch of the X-presso app as a “game-changer”.“When I started at Lloyd’s, I remember seeing a lady walking around with an enormous suitcase,” Mr Ward said.“I asked her: ‘Are you off on holiday?’ She simply replied: “No, this is how we transport our claim forms about,” he told the newspaper. The app is expected to be rolled out across the Lloyd’s market over the next few months. Brokers and underwriters will be able to access it using the Lime Street building’s free and newly-enhanced Wi-Fi network.
