Premier Craig Cannonier told the Insurance Day Summit Bermuda in his opening address yesterday: “The Bermuda Government wishes to listen we wish to place policies around the insurance industry which will cause it to thrive."He said: "If we don't listen to the industry we will never be able to thrive.”The Premier was the first speaker at the two-day conference which filled a large conference room with attendees there to hear more than 50 chief executive and senior management speakers including Representatives Bill Hager and Kevin Rader from the Florida House of Representatives, who are in Bermuda to encourage reinsurers to do business in their state.Speaking off-script for the first half of his speech, an animated Premier Cannonier told the audience: "I need you to make some noise I need you to be talking to us and we will respond," adding: "What you need to know is we are here, ready and willing to do business with you."The message was taken from the same page as he delivered to the Bermuda Captive Conference held two weeks ago at the Fairmont Southampton, when he told the audience there: “We appreciate you, and this Government is committed to protecting this industry.”He told the audience yesterday that 85 percent of Bermuda’s foreign earnings comes from the sector. “We have been leaders in the insurance industry for some time, and things change. We must become swifter, and more nimble,” he said.“The Bermuda Government understands the urgency of ‘now’. Martin Luther King coined it — the fact that tomorrow is today. We are faced with the urgency of now — the Government understands the urgency of now.“And doing business in Bermuda has never been easier. We will do what it takes to ensure your success,” he said.“We will make it clear that Bermuda wants to grow international business.“We want to make it clear that international industry is a priority for us.”
