Carigenetics celebrates milestone
CariGenetics, the sole genomic research company dedicated exclusively to people of Caribbean ancestry, has celebrated its third anniversary of incorporation.
Carika Weldon founded the company in 2022 and said it it had grown into a globally recognised leader in precision medicine, health equity and community-driven science.
The company said: “In just three years, CariGenetics has made genetic testing accessible to over 1,300 Caribbean people, discovered unique trends in cancer genetics, pharmacogenetics and cannabis metabolism and has launched the Caribbean Genome Programme, set to genetically test 250,000 Caribbean people by 2030.”
Dr Weldon said: “Three years ago, I took a leap of faith and founded CariGenetics, having never run a company before. Although I did not know exactly what challenges lay ahead, I knew the vision that needed to be executed.
“Caribbean people deserve to be included in the science shaping the future of healthcare.
“They say the three-year mark is the ‘make or break’ point for most companies. Nearly 90 per cent don’t make it past this stage. To be standing here today has not been easy.
“We have made many mistakes, learnt many lessons but have powered through as our mission is great. CariGenetics is here to stay — to make history from the Caribbean for the world.
“We would not be here without our dedicated team, our partners, our investors and, most importantly, the communities in Bermuda and across the Caribbean. Together, we are showing the world that Caribbean science matters.”
