Bermuda among priciest countries for mobile data

Global travellers face the steepest cost to connect in Bermuda when compared with other countries

A company providing a pay-as-you-go eSIM service to global travellers has listed Bermuda with the most expensive mobile data package for visitors.

The Bcengi TravelPass keeps users “connected worldwide with one reusable eSIM — no expirations, no wasted data.”

Unlike other eSIM apps, unused data on Bcengi TravelPass is kept and can be used during a future trip. The owner simply uses it the next time they travel.

But coming to Bermuda forces them to pay at the absolute highest rate, substantially higher than travel to the vast majority of the 200 supported countries.

Travelling to the United Kingdom? The rate is $1.61 per gigabyte.

To the United States? $1.68 per gigabyte. Canada? $5/GB.

To Bermuda? $50.20.

Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Maarten/Saint Martin, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, together with the Turks & Caicos Islands all have a rate for the same global traveller of $7.08/GB.

The other thing they all have in common apart from sunny Caribbean skies is Cable & Wireless as the telecoms provider.

Going to Jersey and the Isle of Man? The rate is $4.16/GB.

Bermuda joins Suriname, Samoa, Haiti, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago with the most expensive price tag for mobile data at $50.20.

They, too, have a common carrier: Digicel.

Kiribati mobile data is the second most expensive all alone at $48.82, provided by Vodafone.

But Digicel also has the third-highest rates at $41.91: Vanuatu, Tonga, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea. Greenland has the same rate using a different provider.

An eSIM is an embedded SIM card that is built into a device, allowing users to activate a cellular plan without a physical SIM card via QR code. It is supported by most modern smartphones, tablets and wearables.

When asked about this pricing tier, a Digicel spokeswoman responded: “Digicel is committed to Bermuda, and that commitment is reflected in our recent investment in and launch of our 5G+ network.

“We deliver strong value through a range of roaming and eSIM options that leverage Digicel’s global footprint, including highly competitive roaming bundles with up to 20GB of roaming data included for postpaid customers.

“Reliable, high-performance connectivity underpins Bermuda’s long-term competitiveness, which is why we prioritise network quality, resilience and continued investment for businesses, public services and households.”
