On an institutional level, blockchain and digital finance is driving a complete disruption of financial infrastructure around the world, the Bermuda Digital Finance Forum was told.

John Darsie, the chief executive of Salt, said that coming out of the forum, it was important to understand the consumer level impact.

The community day activation was to be a demonstration of why the technology accrues value back to users.

He said: “We're going to create what we think is a template for nation state-level adoption of digital finance infrastructure that helps the individual.”

Salt is a unit of Skybridge Capital, the more than 20-year-old asset management firm, founded by Anthony Scaramucci, the American financier and broadcaster who briefly served as the White House communications director.

His ten-day White House job under US president Donald Trump came after working at Goldman Sachs's investment banking, equities, and private wealth management divisions between 1989 and 1996.

Mr Darsie said Salt has been hosting digital finance conferences around the world for 16 years and Bermuda is the latest addition to the world tour, and now officially on the calendar of the digital finance industry.

He praised Bermuda, the Bermuda Monetary Authority and David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, saying the developing industry here is “going to leave a lasting legacy on this island that I think will benefit the local population and drive more business and activity here in Bermuda”.

Mr Darsie told The Royal Gazette that Bermuda was an easy choice to site this type of event.

He said: “Digital finance holds the key to be another growth engine for the island, and we want to be a part of that, by investing in businesses that are domiciled here, hosting our event here and the benefit that has to the local economy.

“So, we hope to be a part of the Bermuda ecosystem for years to come.”

Mr Darsie said that there has been a change in how the industry has been viewed by governments and banks, as they accept that the industry is the future of finance.

He said stock exchanges, too, are getting involved where they can, through partnerships they expect will bring rich rewards.
