Salesforce refuses to accept hackers’ ransom demands

A major cloud-based software company with connections to Bermuda is refusing to bow to cybercriminals claiming to have infiltrated its system.

San Francisco-based Salesforce has ties to the island including Crmmetry, a Salesforce.com consultancy that services Bermuda.

Salesforce refuses to pay extortion demands from the hackers calling themselves Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters.

The cyberattackers claim to have stolen more than a billion records linked to 39 firms worldwide including retail giants such as adidas, Home Depot, Disney and Google.

They say they gained access to data through voice phishing scams that tricked employees into installing an infected version of the Salesforce Data Loader, among other tactics.

In a security advisory on its website, Salesforce said it had investigated the claims with the help of outside experts and authorities.

“Our findings indicate these attempts relate to past or unsubstantiated incidents and we remain engaged with affected customers to provide support,” Salesforce said. “At this time, there is no indication that the Salesforce platform has been compromised, nor is this activity related to any known vulnerability in our technology.”

The firm said protecting customers and their data remained its top priority.

“Our security teams are fully engaged to provide guidance and support,” Salesforce said. “As we continue to monitor the situation, we encourage customers to remain vigilant against phishing and social-engineering attempts, which remain common tactics for threat actors.”

The Federal Bureau of investigation has urged the public to protect their systems and report any suspicious activity.

In other Salesforce news, the firm is among several companies, in recent months, directly attributing job cuts to AI-related initiatives.

In a recent podcast interview, Salesforce chief executive Marc Benioff said the company reduced its customer service headcount from 9,000 to about 5,000 after AI agents began handling conversations with customers.
