Employment and training courses show positive results
More than 150 young people were gainfully employed through summer employment and internship programmes, the Minister of Labour and Economy said on Friday.
Jason Hayward said that more than 160 young adults had applied to employment, training and career development programmes between April and July.
He said that these achievements were driven by his ministry’s Youth Employment Strategy.
Mr Hayward added: “Behind these numbers is a powerful story.
“A young man preparing to transition out of the Independent Living Facility is now entering our Bridge to Work programme.
“Another young person secured an interview at the Bermuda Hospitals Board for an addiction counsellor assistant role.
“A 23-year-old was placed with a construction firm to pursue his goal of becoming a mason and a young mother is overcoming childcare barriers while preparing to re-enter the workforce.”
Mr Hayward said that workshops such as mock interviews and CV writing helped more than 120 participants to build soft skills.
He added that more than 540 Bermudians took part in employability training, with 78 per cent of participants saying they saw improved skills.
Under the National Certification and Apprenticeship Board Act, 14 landscapers and seven automotive technicians had been certified and gazetted this year.
He said that seven new undergraduate scholarships, each worth $10,000, were awarded, with another $205,000 in continued funds offered to 21 students.
Mr Hayward assured the House of Assembly that the Department of Workforce Development was getting “tangible results”.
He added: “These efforts are central to the people pillar of Bermuda’s Economic Development Strategy, ensuring our workplace is prepared, resilient and positioned to seize opportunities in both traditional industries and the emerging economy.”
