Friendly road rusers

March 24, 2011Dear Sir,With the local Economy being the way that it is at present and with a number of people losing their jobs, a thought has come to me with regards to how we may capitalise on what Bermuda is famous for, that being the friendliness of its road users. One possible answer has been right in front of my eyes, and I just did not see it. Perhaps it was because I could not see the forest for the trees, or just did not recognise it for what it truly is. That is that all of us, myself included who have the privilege of operating motorised vehicles on our roads, whether they be trucks, automobiles or bikes, for some reason like to interact with our fellow road users, whether it is because we believe that it is someone we know, or someone that we just want to say hello to. And in our haste to give a friendly greeting we do not mind crossing over the centre line in the middle of the road to accomplish this. Now, some of you may (or may not) be wondering how this may help the economy. What if some entrepreneur were to contact Works & Engineering, with a plan to supply the Department with spikes that could be placed down the centre of the roads whenever a road is being re-paved.This may have at least two benefits, if not more. The most important one of all being better driving habits, which in turn may hopefully cut down on the number of road accidents. Secondly, a number of people may choose to start up their own roadside mobile wheel and tire repair service, to assist with the potential increase in the number of flat tires. Plus while waiting for tire service, one may indeed have a friendly chat with any fellow travelers who may have also suffered a flat.I am sure that the hard working members of the Bermuda Road Safety Council, will be more than pleased to know that as part of being a safe and courteous road user, we are all now looking to improve our driving habits.KENNETH G STONEWarwick
