Now is not the time
June 8, 2011Dear Sir,I can't help but notice that the issue of Independence is being dusted off again by various politicians and others. Of course, if we had put the issue to a Referendum (like a majority of the public was calling for) the last time it was a “hot button” issue, these same individuals wouldn't be wasting their breath (again). The most recent advocate for the discussion has suggested that if now isn't the time, when is a good time? To me the answer is very simple. Independence will not create jobs, put food on the table or pay the rent. Independence will not fix education. Independence will not put an end to the escalating crime and violence. What Independence would do is channel Government's focus, money, and resources away from these critical issues and into an expensive and lengthy process … and let's admit it, Government is currently short on focus, money and resources. Will there be a “right time” for Independence? Possibly, but today is definitely not it.KENT SMITHSt George's
