A great championships
June 11, 2011Dear Sir.Congratulations to all those associated with the Track and Field Champs 2011! The event showed the effort was great with work undertaken by many. From the excellent programme design and content, to the overwhelming support the event's success was evident. It was wonderful to see the cheering fans, friends and families of the numerous athletes.A great addition was the national 10K champ road race, (Race director April Vesey). Not only did it combine track with road (I feel they should embrace each other), the event attracted a larger number to support the younger track athletes which was so nice. My prayer is that this race will grow to reflect the grand concept and effort invested, certainly the trophies, medals and certificates were worthy of a class championship. It was prudent to include a race for those having trained for the 24th of May now, left with little choice in which to compete with much training completed. Just as well, because the hilly course on a hot humid day might not be for the first-timer. On a side note, I'm not sure if a later start would fit the programme but it would help the runners. Who knows, you might even include a 5k once numbers grow.BTFA President Donna Watson, Committee Chair Gina Evans, along with Board of Directors Michele Williams, Robert Oliver, Clarence Smith, Freddie Evans, Lloyd VanPutten, April Vesey and Paul Simons together with meet directors Cal Simons and Jarita Dill along with a multitude of volunteers should be proud and satisfied with a job well done. Undoubtedly, sponsors Belco, Dunkley's, Bank of Bermuda Foundation, Butterfield and Vallis, Market Place, Wilks Catering, Sportseller and Orbis selected a “winner” to partner with.Living during sad times of misspent youth gaining prominence, it was refreshing and uplifting to witness our young Bermudians striving and succeeding in a vital discipline. The Carifta Games April 2012 to be held here in BDA looks to be in good hands.Sports: Enhancing lives together,EDWARD (STEADY EDDIE) FISHERWarwick
