Impact of less ferry trips

June 11, 2011Dear Sir,I respectfully submit my opinion for possible printing in The Royal Gazette.Let’s do some maths. Between Greenbank and Salt Kettle House (only) lets say there are 30 nightly guests ... and let’s say they stay a week at a time. That looks to me to be at least 1,560 airline tickets (30 x 52). Let’s say 66 percent of the people use the public transportation system. That’s 1,030 transportation passes per year. (Again, averaging a week’s stay each) Now, let’s say of the 730 days available to eat out in Hamilton, let’s say (365 days available at each location) people eat out 50 percent of the time ... that’s 365 days of meals. Remember this is only using two affected properties in this example!Given the present disgrace of a ferry schedule on the pink route, how many of these 1,560 airline tickets, 1,030 transportation passes, and 365 days of meals will decide to go elsewhere? I have read quite a few in the letters to the editor in the last few weeks. ... and how many didn’t get published? How much fuel can you be saving ... and to continue to maintain the same staffing levels?I bet the hoteliers, taxi drivers (airport), retailers, wait staffs, restaurateurs, and housekeeping staffs would love to chime in at the loss their income. Oh, yeah ..... the Marine and Port employees are probably happy, though! Illogical, ill-advised and short sighted ... another mountain to climb before tourism numbers return to close to Bermuda’s heyday! Bloody shame! Respectfully submitted,SUE BEHRLE“Onion” with over 40 trips in my heart!Landsdowne, Pennsylvanias
