What might happen next?

August 20, 2011Dear Sir,It amazes me how some parents show little interest in teaching their children to respect property and to not be cruel to animals. A group of neighbourhood children decided to “have some fun” by throwing rocks at my dog one evening. He was on my property and inside a closed gate at the time. This is not the first time this group and others have been caught engaging in destructive and antisocial activities. Are they that bored, jaded or indifferent? No thought is given as to how they would react if an unruly group decided to target them with such actions. As a teacher I witness a variety of behaviours, positive and negative, but am still shocked at what some children do or find amusing.I have reported behaviours to principals and spoken to parents but some individuals persist in acting in a rude and potentially dangerous manner. Unfortunately I have to drive by their homes daily as there is no alternative route to a main road away from their yelled out comments and other gestures.Parents need to be involved and when they find out that such activities are going on, do what they can to prevent them. Throwing rocks one day ... who knows what the next. I do know that if such behaviours happen again I will be contacting the police and filing complaints as I have the right to live on my property and travel this island unmolested.
