Barn needs to lower prices

September 27, 2011Dear Sir,I have patronised The Barn (the KEMH Charity Shop on St Brendan’s Road in Devonshire) for some 25 years now, both as a resident and now as a visitor, and was horrified to see a recent sign outside to the effect that no more donations would be accepted until a certain date as there was no room for them. What? No room at The Barn for donations? What is wrong with this picture?I’ll tell you what I think is wrong: in my opinion, the current administration is trying to run it like a profit-and-loss business instead of like the charity shop that it is, and the prices of the goods therein are simply too high, so people are no longer coming in their droves as they used to, so much more stuff isn’t being bought, so there’s no room for new stuff. My suggestion to The Barn administration? Drop the prices. You may take a hit at first, but that’ll be only temporary as your income will increase again once the word gets around that The Barn is once more truly a bargain place to shop. You’ll get more people in, who will spend more money buying more stuff, which will leave more room for more new stuff, and so the cycle goes on. About 20 years ago you had the customers but not the space: now you have the space but not the customers!DAVIE KERRSmith’
