Save on the fireworks
Save on the fireworksOctober 3, 2011Dear Sir,While watching VSB news one evening last week, I was very pleased to hear that the Annual Christmas Boat Parade was to once again be held, as it is something many enjoy and look forward to.One thing caught my attention though, which was when it was mentioned that this year, due to lack of sponsors, the fireworks at the end of the parade may not take place as the cost of this is around $15,000! Although fireworks are very pretty, they are over and done with in a very short space of time and despite all the “oohs” and “ahhs” heard from the watching crowd, after several minutes they are finished and everyone is busy hurrying back to their cars to no doubt not give much more of a thought to the $15,000 which just went up in smoke!I do not want to sound like the Christmas Grinch but I am sure I am not the only one who at this time of year especially can think of so many other worthy causes to spend that sort of money on. There are many, many charities which could use the money for food and clothing, Christmas gifts for children and the elderly and not forgetting the homeless and food and shelter for animals etc. The list goes on and on.If companies did feel they wished to sponsor the event I am sure there are lot of people who would agree that they would gladly forgo the fireworks and would get great pleasure in knowing others would benefit from the monies sent to the charities instead.BRANGMANHamilton Parish
