Unemployment insurance

October 6, 2011Dear Sir,I  don’t how long this recession will last, what I do know is how we can help ourselves to be better prepared the next time we encounter similar circumstances in the future.Mr Editor, I’m forwarding a solution to help my fellow countrymen and future generations to survive during tuff times like this. Due to the highly successful economy Bermuda has enjoyed none of us have seriously thought about difficult times such as this. This is not to be blamed on any particular political party or Organisations, Governments present or past. It was something that was not thought of.What I am proposing is a National Unemployment Insurance Plan (NUIP) that if implemented would serve to help many of the citizens of this country through the tuff challenges they face in these circumstances. The government has announced a plan where anyone who fits their criteria that they put in place can gain financial relief from drawing from their government pension to assist them in keeping their heads above board. This would not be necessary in the future if the NUIP is adopted which would leave their pensions intact and left to do what it is design to do.Of course like any investment it will take time for it to mature into the financial responsibility it will need to care for. In time the government of the day might consider adding disability citizens to the payout plan once it has matured and borrow from it for important projects or needs.I propose if the NUIP takes effect we deduct $10.00 from the employee and a $5 from the employer for each employer to start the plan.Mr Editor, I’m putting this solely on the governments plate to research, and if they feel if it is valid than they should move and put in place. I’m against privatizing this NUIP for a number of reasons. Most importantly it is too valuable to put into a Private Corporate hands or a government/corporate partnership. It should be administered just as the government pension scheme.I’m not suggesting we move forward with this National Unemployment Insurance Plan(NUIP) now because of the aforementioned problems that presently exist but something certainly we seriously need to look into when we deem ourselves recovered from this recession.BROWNLOW ADDERLEYSouthampton
