Confused by carrot embargo
@$:November 29, 2011Dear Sir,Regarding the Report From The House article on Monday, November 28, 2011 entitled “Loophole in carrot embargo to end”, I would like to ask a question. Derrick Burgess states that the embargo on importation of carrots is an attempt to keep out the carrot pest called Carrot Rust Fly. The article goes on to say that this pest burrows into the carrot tap root, resulting in distorted, misshapen carrots that are unmarketable. If the carrot with this pest is unmarketable, how would it get sold to a distributor and ultimately end up in Bermuda? (Or any grocery store, for that matter).Wouldn’t only healthy carrots get to market? Minimal Internet research shows that this same pest can infect parsnips and celery. Are we to ban importation of these vegetables as well?Nowhere on the Internet does it suggest that this pest is spread through carrots sold in the grocery store. Is everyone acting on hearsay?@$:CARROT LOVERPaget
