Wrong end of the stick
Raising standardsDecember 1, 2011Dear Sir,Some of Brownlow Adderley’s goals may be laudable (letter printed December 1) but the solution presented of eliminating private schools is flawed. If Government schools were of the same achievement level as private schools, most people would send their children to Government schools. The goal should be to bring children up to the same level. If there were no private schools in Bermuda, the children would be sent to private schools abroad, increasing, not reducing, the divide. In any case, Government schooling costs more than private schooling.Mr Adderley has it back to front. One solution could be to eliminate most of the Government schools in favour of more private education by means of a voucher system (I need to attribute this solution to Becky A), encouraging competition between the schools and between the children. It won’t even everything up. Some children are brighter; some are harder working and some have better, more involved parents.JULIAN GRIFFITHSCity of Hamilton
