VISITOR’S VIEW
Passenger behaved badlyJanuary 3, 2012Dear Sir,I have been to Bermuda on several occasions, sometimes on business and many times for a vacation, I have met some very good friends and many are Bermudian, so when planning my holidayvacation, I decided to return to spend New Year’s on your beautiful Island.Overall my visit was quite enjoyable, The Onion Drop, fireworks, and the wonderful band on Front Street. One of the main reasons why I continue to come to Bermuda is the wonderful demeanour and friendliness of the Bermudan people, It is the type of behaviour that I take back home with me, that makes me a nicer and better person. There was one incident that bothered me quite a bit. At first I felt it was not my business, and I am writing this as I now feel I should have gotten involved. On the Friday before New Year’s, my wife and I decided to go to Dockyard by bus. We enjoy taking the bus as it is a great way to see the sights, we were going to Hamilton from Dockyard, and we were greeted by one of the most colourful and quite entertaining bus drivers we have ever met! So much so he greeted my wife by addressing her as “Gorgeous” and I was “General”. At first I thought this was quite unusual until I noticed him greeting all who entered the bus the same way!At one stop a group of people were about to get on the bus, but one lady whom I presume was also a tourist as she seemed to not know the fare of the bus, seemed to be very upset that the driver was not able to give her change and was becoming indifferent and loud. This very charming driver was trying to explain the fare and I remember his telling her numerous times that he does not give change back, all while she was being obnoxious, he kept calm and tried to calm her to no avail. She proceeded to not sit as directed not only by the driver and also other passengers. My wife even offered her the change back that she was demanding from the driver. At one point the driver stated that if anyone were willing to give their information as witnesses, please sign his book, I did not, and that is why I am writing this letter, after we arrived and left I could not stop thinking about the driver’s plea for a witness. He was genuinely worried about this incident. As a tourist who has travelled extensively, it is very important to be kind and patient to others’ customs. This woman was a horrible person, especially to a hard working man who is nice to everyone, I think there should be a law prohibiting unfavourable treatment to locals from tourists, and I think that these public buses should be equipped with some type of surveillance system to protect the public and the drivers.STEVEN HILLNew York City
