Thanks, Mayor Gosling

Charles Gosling

May 11, 2012Dear Sir,I have often wondered why anyone would work tirelessly, honourably and without compensation for any municipality, never mind the Corporation of Hamilton. The phone calls, the interruptions at all hours and of course the inevitably criticism would be cause enough for most people not to become involved. Actually, that’s the problem; most people sit on the sidelines and don’t become involved. Charles Gosling might have chosen to spend his time worrying about the one thing that actually provides him a monetary return for his efforts, his company, but instead chose to give of his time and financial expertise freely. He should be commended. With a shrinking local economy and the inability to collect wharfage fees, Charles Gosling managed to keep the lights on and the streets and sidewalks of Hamilton clean. He handled a myriad of problems, opened up the Corporation’s meetings for greater accountability and equally important, was always available. Hamilton, and I mean all of Hamilton, is not perfect. There’s still plenty of work to be done but the new team, led by Graeme Outerbridge will be faced with the same challenges of too little money but oh so many problems. I wish Graeme and his team well and hope that they will be successful. For many years I served on the board of directors of The Museum of the City of New York. Many of you would not be familiar with this gem of a museum which celebrates the story of New York’s incredible history and its amazing diverse people. During my tenure at the museum, I never failed to read the inscription by Abraham Lincoln, carved in marble and not be affected by these words: “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.” I can’t help but think that Charles Gosling is such a man and deserves our heartfelt appreciation for serving the community.ELAINE C MURRAYDirectorThe Irish Linen Shop
