June 14, 2012Dear Sir,Your article ‘Gospel Singer Dae Preps for a Higher Level’ about singer Mashundae Pearman and her struggles with stuttering should be inspiring to all the people who stutter in Bermuda. The same statistics apply everywhere in the world in that one percent of the adult population and four percent of the child population stutter. Since Bermuda has a population of 69,000, you can do the maths to know how many people in the country have to deal with stuttering on a daily basis.Like Dae, there are countless singers who stutter when they talk but are fluent when they sing. There has never been a definitive explanation for this phenomenon, but some people posit that since speech is a left brain function and singing a right brain function, there is no correlation between the two. Some famous singers who stutter can be found on the list of Famous People Who Stutter on the website of The Stuttering Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org) are Marc Anthony, Ann Wilson (lead singer of Heart), Robert Merrill, Mel Tillis, Carly Simon, Gareth Gates, Shane Yellowbird, Indiana Judd, Paul Young and more.I just wish to point out to people in Bermuda that the website of The Stuttering Foundation, a non-profit organisation, is a great source for people who stutter of all ages because it gives abundant information and many free resources. In addition to people who stutter, it has material geared towards parents, teachers and speech therapists. What is heartening to me is I know that the publication of this article likely inspired some young people in Bermuda who are struggling with stuttering. I am sure that one day in the future that The Royal Gazette will print an article about Mashundae Pearman (aka Dae) and she has served as a role model to young people who stutter in Bermuda.LAURA PALMERHouston, Texas
