What is wrong with us?

July 29, 2012Dear Sir,Despite the fact that words nearly fail me, I feel obliged to write this letter to voice utter disgust and disbelief that after all these years, we are still unable to provide a bus schedule for the people of Bermuda. This island is 22 square miles with a population the size of a small town, and we can’t even organise a bus schedule? There is something wrong somewhere. To make matters worse, meetings are called in the middle of a busy working day, inconveniencing everyone trying to go about their business. Where is the leadership? Mrs Thatcher, where are you? The Island has barely recovered from Union action in May of 1981 that almost finished us off as a tourist resort, and now they are at it again. Who cares if hundreds of tourists are stranded in Dockyard waiting for the bus or ferry? Obviously not the members of the Union. Is no one strong enough to take this matter in hand, and get it organised once and for all?Whose idea was it to employ a Canadian consultant to help in this very local matter, and I wonder how many thousands of taxpayers’ dollars he is getting?I assume that drivers are paid by the hour, and with so many good drivers unemployed, why not take on part time drivers to take the routes that regular drivers are unwilling to fill? Don’t want to work nights and weekends? OK, find an unemployed driver who will jump at the chance. No need to pay overtime, take on part time drivers who will be grateful to fill the gap.We desperately need strong leadership that will not allow this country to deteriorate further.E RABENPaget
