Strengthening the Causeway

August 20, 2012Dear Sir,Adding to my previous letter in regards to building up our Causeway area, I would suggest the following as to how we could get this heavy sheet piling to the job site:1. The best way to get this heavy sheet piling to Bermuda would be to use the Barge Traffic Method.2. To use Castle Roads entranceway into Castle Harbour, thereby eliminating any use of our docks or bridges to move these heavy weights.3. Castle Roads is wide enough and deep enough to have a tug and barge to go through it.4. After our hurricane season was over would be the best time to move this operation into high gear.5. To help fill up the desired area after the sheet piling was put in place I would suggest placing any old heavy equipment such as bulldozers, old cranes, used Belco pieces, and other heavy items such as those heavy Second World War bomb igloos that are on Morgan’s Point as they weigh some 3.5 tons each at the base of the fill.6. After all the sheet piling is finished and all the fill is in place I would suggest that a permanent bridge be built and high enough to allow large sailing vessels and other boating transport to go though Castle harbour on the Easter end of our Causeway.7. A bridge structure could be brought here the same way the sheet piling would have had to be brought here by a crane-barge.The question now is how are we going to pay for this massive operation? We could start by having a controlled lottery in place. Maybe we could convince any interested parties to help us with this enormous project.PETER BROMBY SRPagetPs I still think this proposed method of a reconstructed Causeway would be the correct way to go. It would not have to be maintained as much as if you had the high rise bridge type.Also remember our present Causeway is more than 100 years old and it was never designed to handle our present mode of transport.
