Getting priorities right

Is training people as nail technicians the solution for economic recovery?

September 1, 2012Dear Sir,While I applaud the Progressive Labour Party for introducing a programme to increase employment, do we really need a dozen more nail technicians? If, once trained, these technicians are aimed at future hotel spa employment and will earn foreign currency by replacing foreigner workers, I believe it is a great initiative. However, should these ladies be destined for high street salons where Bermudians are the clients, I’m not sure if we should be encouraging locals to get their nails done, some at significant cost, rather than buying quality groceries, paying the rent and Belco and preparing their children for school. Has the PLP Government considered training Bermudians in areas where we desperately need more local involvement, like nursing, where a career can benefit both the individual and the entire community, and not just a few vain women who must have the latest nail design? It seems just a couple of months ago that the PLP were bombarding us with financial advice not to spend beyond our means and quantify what are real needs and wants. Pity they don’t listen to their own advice. I’d be interested to know where these nail ladies are to be employed upon completion of their training. I’d also like to know where the drywall technicians, who are being trained at the taxpayer’s expense are to be employed once they have completed their basic training because without long term practical experience, once the only two projects on the Island that will use any quantity of drywall are complete, there will be little to nothing for them to do for many years to come.BITERPembroke
