Setting an example
September 23, 2012Dear Sir,We all know that Paula Cox has overseen expenditure that has been significantly in excess of the revenue received by the Progressive Labour Party Government. I reviewed the Government’s figures and in her eight years as Finance Minister, Paula Cox received around $7.1 billion and spent around $8.4 billion. Mr Cox has spent $1.3 Billion or about 18 percent more than Bermuda earned while her father Eugene, when Finance Minister, spent just $30 million or one percent more than Bermuda earned. The PLP blame the global financial crisis for Bermuda’s financial problems, but even when allowing for three percent average annual inflation, Paula Cox received around $150 Million more every single year than Eugene Cox did. Had the daughter spent at the same inflation adjusted level as her father and managed the public purse with the same care and restraint as her father, she would only have spent $6.6 billion dollars. Had the daughter followed the example of her father, Bermuda would currently have around $500 million in the bank instead of a $1.3 Billion debt. Over the last eight years the PLP Government received a windfall in revenue that, with moderate care, would have seen Bermuda avoid all the problems being experienced by many other countries. Instead we are in dire financial straights and the PLP have not one single sound idea of how to reverse the damage they have wrought on every Bermudian.BUDGET BRIEFPembroke
