A shocking stereotype
October 11, 2012Dear Sir,I write to you in dismay at the continuing misrepresentation of the character of accountants as portrayed in Broadway musical vehicles such as “The Producers”, currently playing at the City Hall Theatre.Leopold and his fellow accountants are projected stereotypically as dull, boring, timid and without social graces. In real life accountants, generally, are vibrant, witty, jovial and almost over-endowed with charm, and many play rugger. They’re sparkling company, ever up for a lark, and will do anything for a laugh (auditing investment banks’ financial statements springs to mind). If you don’t believe me, how do you account for the fact that they’re in such demand to provide the entertainment at actuaries’ children’s parties?JOHN GIAVARINIPaget
