No logic on gambling

October 28, 2012Dear Sir,Rolfe Commissiong in his column in your newspaper on October 21 showed the kind of twisted logic that landed Bermuda in its current mess. Having explained very well why gambling is bad (“the house always wins”) and having said he stopped gambling decades ago, he went on to throw his support behind casinos in Bermuda on the basis that it will be a shot in the arm for the economy and tourism. So while sensible people will not step foot in a casino, there is no problem with other Bermudians handing their money over to the house, which wins most gambling games after all, it will help the economy, even if some individuals lose everything. There are other areas where the same logic can be applied. Legalised prostitution? While a sensible person would not waste their money and risk their health by hiring a prostitute, the construction of brothels would help the economy, along with the development of STD clinics. Legalised drugs? While a sensible person would not take heroin, manufacturing it would be a shot in the arm pardon the pun for the economy and a terrific export, so let’s do that too. Legalised animal fighting? While a sensible person would object to animal cruelty, why not bring in fighting dogs and cock fighting? A purpose-built arena would be a shot in the arm for the construction sector and it’s bound to bring visitors to the Island who want to bet and see some blood spilled at the same time. This is the kind of moral leadership Bermuda needs now.GAMBLING MANSandys
