Filling the Corporation’s coffers

November 1, 2012Dear Sir,The Corporation of Hamilton must really want some cash these days. Just recently I alone have swelled their coffers by $150. As the ferries were cancelled on the Monday after Hurricane Leslie failed to show, I drove into Hamilton and parked in City Hall carefully noting the time so I could leave my office (which is opposite City Hall) to move my car. When the time came to go over to City Hall I was on the phone and therefore I was about five minutes late and found my car had been clamped. Surely a five-minute “grace period” wouldn’t be to much to ask. Then I tried to “support my local retailer” which ended up costing me a $50 parking fine. I like shopping at The Supermart but always find parking difficult as there are never any spaces outside and the car park opposite is invariably full. Therefore I was delighted when a car pulled out from outside the store. I parked and set my EasyPark for an hour. Imagine my surprise when I came out and found I had been ticketed. Since when have you not been able to park along that part of Front Street from Monday to Friday from 4pm until 6pm, when most people after leaving their offices want to go to the Supermart?Instead of trying to stop us supporting our local retailers I would suggest the Corporation divert their energies to more useful pursuits such as cleaning up the park by the Library. I had to go to Mailboxes so took a short cut through the park from Queen Street. As I entered all I could hear was loud cursing and swearing which was coming from about six or seven men sitting inside the park. As I passed all I heard was liberal use of the “F” word. The next morning I had to return to Mailboxes so I came through the park back onto Queen Street. This time the men were outside the public toilets again cursing and swearing. Another delightful site for our tourists. Where are the “rangers” the Corporation said they were hiring to rid the city of scenes like this?CAROL CARVALHOSouthampton
