This letter writer says keep the Regiment over the proposed Jobs Corps

November 17, 2012Dear Sir,I read with amazement in today’s Royal Gazette an article on page three titled ‘Jobs Corps’ talk attracts only four’. Apparently the goal of the programme is “for young people be become confident, self-directed learners, and active contributors who can work in a team and be concerned citizens”. I am amazed because that is exactly what the Bermuda Regiment does for the youth of our country, as ‘A Proud Father’ said in your Letters to the Editor the other week. The Progressive Labour Party want to get rid of the draft — for votes — but in doing so they will accept only volunteers. The draft is needed though; most young men don’t necessarily know what is best for their future and often take the path of least resistance. There are too many ex-Regiment members out there who would not have volunteered but where drafted and in the end had to admit it was one of the best decisions they didn’t make. Jobs Corps? Seems like more wasted money too me. We already have a Job Corps. If you want to get ahead, gain confidence, be a self-directed learner and actively contribute then join the Bermuda Regiment and get paid at the same time! Wow, now there is a concept!MARK EMMERSONPembroke
