A lose/lose situation
November 17, 2012Dear Sir,After reading a Letter to the Editor by ‘Breaking the Silence — Smith’s’ last week, I was inspired to comment. If you missed it, please find it online and read it! As a Bermudian of Portuguese heritage (not that it should matter), I could and would support a political party who spoke and thought like you did in your letter regardless of the their socio-economic background or racial heritage. For me, at this time, that is the One Bermuda Alliance. I will not embrace a party that uses race to justify its actions. That is a lose/lose situation. Time eventually ran out for the race baiters in South Africa and it will also run out for this current representation of the Progressive Labour Party. While the United Bermuda Party understood the economy and protected it for the benefit of all (some more than others unfortunately), they neglected to appreciate that all members of a society need to experience growth and prosperity. They squandered a perfect opportunity in a period of economic growth to empower the entire population. I wasn’t there in those meeting rooms, but I would guess it was about maintaining power. It is in this way that the current PLP are just like the old UBP. Maintaining power at all cost. It is a human weakness. My hope is that the OBA will start a new way to govern, as an inclusive government. One way that they could do this is by choosing those in the PLP with merit and the smarts to become part of the new government in some capacity and give the entire Island representation in their government. We are only 60,000 people on a rock in the ocean. It shouldn’t be that difficult.DOWNDEROADSmith’s
