Prisoners should lose rights

November 28, 2012Dear Sir,Re: Curb’s talking pointsWhilst I can agree with some of their points, I disagree with a few of them. The one percent mortgage and three percent for expanding families, is fine in theory, but is a bankrupt Government going to finance this? Mortgages are based on world interest rates and are not something one can go to the local banks and say: “Hey, you have to give this person a one percent mortgage”.The repealing of the “stop and search” police powers: Well, if you have nothing to hide it is a minor inconvenience and only those who are breaking the law have something to fear from such activities. People who commit crimes and are incarcerated lose their civil rights. They have taken from victims their rights so they deserve to lose theirs. It is not just in Bermuda but appears to be the world over, that victims have problems in being recompensed and it is the perpetrator who had a bad upbringing or was not given a chance. Yes, I agree that “a complete review of the Island’s criminal justice system” needs to be revised and that the criminals must pay for their crimes and the victims be recompensed and not out of the public purse.ANTONY SIESEPaget
